I’m a person who loves sitting down after a long day and watching TV shows and movies. The 2000s was an iconic era for some of the best movies produced. Here are some of my favorite movies made in that era and possibly some new recommendations for your next watch.
1. 10 Things I Hate About You
Starting off with the best; 10 things I hate about you. This movie was made in 1999-2000, and made the best entrance into the early 2000s. It takes place at the fictional Padua High School in Washington state. It’s based around the two Stratford sisters; Kat and Bianca, when one of the guys at their high school wants to take Bianca out but can’t because their dad has this crazy rule where she can’t date until her sister does and Kat isn’t the brightest nor nicest person, they make a risky bet for whoever is crazy enough to take her out. But when Patrick; the guy who took Kat out, starts falling for her in a real way, he doesn’t know if he should tell her or let the lies catch up to him in hopes that she will forgive him.

2. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days
If you’ve heard of the iconic yellow dress, you’ve heard of this movie. Set in New York City, a popular advice journalist; Andie Anderson, wants to expand her writing to things other than shoes and boys, but her stubborn boss doesn’t think she can do it so she makes a bet. Enter Ben Berry a confident, but very stubborn executive who wants to make a very good deal with a big business, so he decides to also make a bet. Ironically they end up betting on each other, but little do they know that he is trying to make her fall in love and she is trying to drive him away. Will they risk it all for one silly bet or will they realize that love is stronger than any job position?

3. 13 Going on 30
We all had a time in our life that we wished we were older than we were, some people are still going through that time. This movie is based around a 13 year old girl; Jenna, who as any teenage girl would looked through magazines of models and imagined how glorious their life must be and how perfect they look at 30 years old, so she made a wish. A wish that altered her life and she woke up in her own apartment as a beautiful 30 year old with her dream job in New York City, but there was only one problem she wasn’t 30, well not mentally, mentally she was still that insecure little 13 year old girl. As she’s navigating how she got here and trying to put the pieces of her life back together, she realizes that being 30 isn’t glorious and she isn’t thriving as much as she thought she would be. No, being thirty meant she had her own responsibilities, didn’t have her parents to rely on, and she was alone. This movie shows the difficulties with wanting to be what you’re not and combines it with relatable and romantic content for its time.

4. The Princess Diaries
As little girls, we all wanted to be princesses and live in the big castle with the most perfect prince. As for most of us that didn’t come true, but for Mia Thermopolis that dream became a reality in her life. Mia wasn’t your average high heels and dress wearing girly girl, no she didn’t even like wearing makeup or getting dressed up. In fact, Mia was the opposite of a girly girl, but when her grandmother from Genovia came to town and told her she was inheriting the throne, she had to change up really quickly. As she went along with her grandmothers wishes, she didn’t know if she wanted to be a princess and she didn’t care about being popular after a while. Towards the end, Mia realized that all she wanted to do was make her dad proud and take care of his country he once called home.

5. Legally Blonde
Saving the best for last is the most memorable, girly movie ever created that will most likely still be iconic in 20 years. This movie is based around Malibu barbie; Elle Woods, who is the leader of the Delta Nu sorority. After she gets broken up with because she’s too “blonde” she decides to win her man back by getting into Harvard law school, so she’s more “sophisticated” for him. This blonde may look dumb, but she has a lot of brains underneath all that bleach. As the movie goes on Elle realizes that she doesn’t need to change herself for a boy, but instead better herself just for her. This movie navigates through the doubt most women have in themselves because a man told them they can’t do something and proves to us that we can be independent and be better, not for a man, but for ourselves.
