This Aladdin live-action movie is a remake of the beloved animated Aladdin film of 1992 by Disney. Released on May 24 2019, the remake was directed by Guy Ritchie. Its story resembles that of a tale found in an ancient Middle Eastern fairy tale collection called “The Arabian Nights Tales”. With the presence of Mena Massoud starring as Aladdin, Naomi Scott playing Jasmine, and famous Will Smith as Genie, the film leaves no doubts of its success.
The movie begins by introducing us to Aladdin, a thief struggling through the hardships of life in the city, who falls in love with a princess named Jasmine. The thief soon finds himself with the solution to all his problems in his very own hands: a magic lamp with a Genie inside that can fulfill three wishes. Using his first wish to turn himself into a prince, Aladdin goes through a series of events to win the princess’s heart. Facing the difficulties of revealing the truth of his identity to Jasmine, Aladdin soon finds himself living a lie. Amidst his problems, Jafar, an evil sorcerer, becomes a great threat to the kingdom, resulting in Aladdin finally learning what truly matters about a person, other than their riches.

From jumping between buildings and stealing around the city, to wandering around through a castle and facing an evil sorcerer, the film is full of unexpected turns of events and heart touching moments. By the climax, Aladdin discovers a significant change within his heart as he faces Jafar. At that moment of the story the internal changes that had taken place inside not only Aladdin’s heart but every other character’s hearts are tested and become clearly visible, leaving the audience with dropped jaws and giving them the hope of a happy ending.
Following high Disney standards, it is clear how this film was made with the utmost care and attention to detail. Throughout the story, the film is filled with accurate and highly researched Middle Eastern cultures, which influence the environment and are reflected through the characters’ outfits, actions, and dialogue. Winning the Grammy Award for ‘Song of the Year’ for the song ‘A Whole New World,’ the film gives us a glimpse of how impressive its original musical track is. In addition, Disney never disappoints with its special effects, especially in Aladdin, where the audience can feel what it’s like to be inside the story themselves by simply watching all the magical things that Genie can do.
