Who is Hispanic Heritage month meant for?

Hispanic Heritage month is dedicated to celebrating Spanish, Mexican, Central and South American, and Caribbean contributions. The month-long celebration kicks off on September 15, which serves as the independence day for most Central American countries. Other countries, such as Mexico and Belize, have their independence days shortly after.

Traditions and Celebrations

There are many ways to celebrate Hispanic Heritage month. Many teachers, including our own Cherokee Spanish department, study the contributions of Hispanic Americans in history by doing projects, creating displays, and even throwing class parties.

Hispanic Heritage month offers us a wonderful opportunity to celebrate and honor the diversity among us.

Every country has their own celebrations as well. For example, Costa Rica celebrates their independence day for two days, the 14th and 15th of September. Costa Rican children hand-make Faroles, or lanterns, in the form of cultural symbols and icons. These lanterns are displayed in/outside of homes and carried in parades.

Another tradition that spans multiple countries is the annual torch run. The Torch of Independence is carried by high schoolers who apply for the march, starting in Guatemala on September 9th and ending in Costa Rica on the 14th. The Torch passes through Honduras, El Salvador, and Nicaragua as well. The tradition symbolizes unity between the nations.

Food

Of course, you can’t have a celebration without food. There are far too many delicious foods to include all of them in this list, but here are a few favorites that you can try to celebrate this month.

  • Empanadas: A popular snack in many countries, empanadas are pastries commonly filled with chicken, cheese, beans, and beef, but the possibilities are endless. They can be savory or sweet, but they are always sure to be tasty.
  • Gallo Pinto: A Central American staple, Gallo Pinto is a dish made by mixing rice, black beans, and a blend of spices. Gallo Pinto is often served with eggs and meat for breakfast.
  • Tacos: While I’m sure most people have tried tacos in their life, it never hurts to try a new variation. Tacos come in hundreds of combinations with different types of meat, tortillas, and veggies to try. Even those with dietary restrictions are able to find a good taco.

Hispanic Americans have played a large role in our country’s history. Hispanic Heritage Month is a great way to celebrate their important contributions, but don’t limit yourself to this month only. Every day is a great day to appreciate and learn about other cultures!
