CHS Baseball down 8-1 comes back to bring the Warriors their first region win

The CHS Varsity Baseball Team claimed the victory in their first region game of the season on Tuesday, March 15 against the North Cobb Warriors at Harvey Cochran Field with a final score of 10-8.

Starting off in the top of the first inning, the Cherokee Warriors quickly took the lead with a single from senior, Caiden Townsend, knocking in Cooper Isaacs.

Sophomore, Reid Worley, started off the Cherokee pithcing line up with one strikeout in the first inning. North Cobb was then able to tie the score 1-1 to end the first inning.

With the second inning being equally scoreless on both sides, the third inning is where things start to look rocky for Cherokee. With Worley still pitching, North Cobb was quick to take the lead, scoring six consecutive runs prior to senior, Brighton Cux coming in to pitch for Worley. North Cobb scores one more run before the inning ends, bringing the score to 1-8 to end the inning.

With morale low heading into the top of the fourth, the Cherokee Warriors never gave up. After a single by junior, Chase Montgomery, Evan Holstein sends a bomb over the fence for a two-run homer.

With two strikeouts from Cux in the bottom of the fourth, the team headed into the fifth with a 3-8 score.

The electric fifth inning started out with a single by Alex Shaw and Caiden Townsend walking. With a error from North Cobb’s shortstop, Shaw was able to score on a single by Alex Morales. Designated hitter, Chase Montgomery, singles on a hard ground ball to center field, knocking Townsend in. With a wild pitch by North Cobb, freshman, Alex Morales, was able to score, shortening the gap to 6-8.

Montgomery was also able to score after a hard ground ball single by junior, Evan Holstein. Collin McGhee was then able to bunt in sophomore, Jayce Jones, to score the tying run. With energy high in the Cherokee duggout, Cooper Isaacs comes to bat and grounds into a fielder’s choice, at which Semaj Burley, in for catcher, Evan Holstein, scores.

The final run of the game was scored when Jackson Bradfield hits a sacrifice to right field, allowing for McGhee to score. The miraculous inning ended with a score of 10-8.

With Cherokee offense taking the lead, it was up to pitcher Brighton Cux to finish it out strong. With four more strikeouts in the last innings, including the consecutive last three of the game, The Cherokee had come back and taken the reigns from North Cobb to earn their first region win of the game.

Cherokee now advances to a 14-1 record and a streak of 13 wins.

We have been doing it all year. Never count Cherokee out of a game, no matter what the score is. We all fight together until the last out. We are the underdogs of 7A because no one believed in us, except ourselves.

The team battled hard in their first region game of the season. We are proud of our CHS Varsity Baseball Warriors for their diligent work.

The Warriors will take on Osborne High School, Tuesday, March 21, at 5:55 p.m. at Beautiful Warrior Field. Come out and support your Warriors as they face the Cardinals!
