Since the Skywalker Saga ended in 2019 with its final movie “The Rise of Skywalker“, many long- awaited mini series have been announced to premiere in the next few years, in a galaxy far, far away.
Disney cued a new era in the “Star Wars” franchise when it was bought from original creator George Lucas back in 2012. Under Disney’s supervision, the “Star Wars” universe has flourished, bringing fans a seventh and final season of the beloved “The Clone Wars” series, many spin-off movies, brand- new series‘ and the last three installments in the Skywalker Saga.

Although Disney brought fans many series on which to marinate with their streaming service Disney +, they’re not finished with the franchise yet. Because of the fantastic success of their first series, “The Mandalorian,” Disney was inspired to create more shows, both live-action and animated. Multiple projects that they have announced in the past have already premiered, like the images shown above, but many are still in development, and fans cannot wait to see what elements the projects will bring to the Star Wars universe.
Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022)
Ewan McGreggor, the beloved actor who plays the young Obi-Wan Kenobi, first captured fan’s hearts in the first movie of the first installment, “The Phantom Menace”, and has played a key role in movies l- lll, but after the the fallout from Episode lll, Kenobi disappeared into the desert for decades, and is not seen until the fourth movie, “A New Hope.”
As Lucasfilm strives to layout the future of the franchise, many series will be added to the sci-fi universe in the near future, featuring the return of classic characters. In Disney’s annual D23 Expo in 2019, Kathleen Kennedy, the President of Lucasfilm, and McGreggor announced that he will return to his iconic role as Kenobi in the upcoming series. It was later announced that Hayden Christensen will reprise his role as Anakin Skywalker / Darth Vader also, growing fans’ excitement for the long-anticipated project, and many other roles have not been announced yet.
“It was such an incredible journey playing Anakin Skywalker. Of course, Anakin and Obi-Wan weren’t on the greatest of terms when we last saw them… It will be interesting to see what an amazing director like Deborah Chow has in store for us all. I’m excited to work with Ewan again. It feels good to be back.”
Hayden Christensen
The plot of the show will center around ten years after the events of “Star Wars: The Revenge of the Sith,” where he will have to live with his greatest defeat, and the series will have six episodes. Deborah Chow, who previously was acclaimed for the success of “The Mandalorian” season one, will direct. Filming wrapped in September of 2021, but the release date has not been confirmed.
Andor (2022)
“Rogue One: a Star Wars Story,” was released to the world in 2016, and the show “Andor” will be a prequel to the movie. In Disney’s D23 Expo 2020, along with many other exciting series, Cassian Andor, who had a significant role in the prior film, was announced to have his own series to capture our screens and hearts sometime this year.
Played by returning actor Diego Luca, Andor will be joined by familiar faces to restore hope in the galaxy after the fallout of “Revenge of the Sith.” Toby Haynes is the lead director of the 12 – episode series, with Kathleen Kennedy, Tony Gilroy and Diego Luna as executive producers.
Ahsoka (2023)
Perhaps the best Christmas present Disney could give Star Wars fans was the news of the very long – awaited return of the beloved Ahsoka Tano. “Ahsoka” was announced in December of 2020 during Disney’s annual D23 Expo to grace our screens in the near future, with Rosarrio Dawson cast as the lead. Dawson’s live-action appearance as the loveable Togruta was already featured in Chapter 13 of “The Mandalorian” back in 2020.
Since the limited series was announced, Disney bosses have released intriguing cast updates, including the return of Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker, the casting of Sabine Wren and the potential appearance of Ezra Bridger (both seen in “Star Wars: Rebels”).
The series is confirmed to be set in the time frame of “The Mandalorian,” which is set five years after “The Return of the Jedi.” Written by Dave Filoni and executive produced by Filoni and Jon Favreau, the series will confirm her whereabouts since the fallout of Order 66 and introduce the live-action General Thawn, a sinister villain throughout the “Star Wars: Rebels” series. Production was confirmed to begin early this year, and rumors say the show could be releasing at the end of this year or early 2023.
The Acolyte (2023)
Unlike many of the other series announced, “The Acolyte” is shown to be a mystery-thriller, featuring the dark side of the force at the end of the High Republic era. The series will touch up on a part of the “Star Wars” universe of which fans have seen little. The term “Acolyte” in the “Star Wars” universe is referred to as “individuals with force abilities who learn from a more experienced Sith Lord,” says Deadline.
The live-action series will feature “The Hate U Give” star Amanda Stenberg, who has been cast as the lead, and production is set to begin sometime this year. Lesyle Headland will write, lead as executive producer and showrun the show. Its exact premiere date is yet to be confirmed, but rumors have it that 2023 will be its release year.
Lando (TBA)
Lando Calrissian, who played a vital role in the fight against the Empire in the original trilogy and was featured in the sequels, will be getting his own limited series sometime in the near future. The plot for the show hasn’t been announced, so the series has endless possibilities- could the series follow the younger version of the character, in which Donald Glover could reprise his role, or older, where Bille Dee Williams could return?
The series is being developed by Justin Simien. Since its announcement back in 2020, the series has made no production or casting announcements, but fans are still hopeful they will lay eyes on the series in the next few years.
Other Exciting News
Along with many new series coming into play, Disney confirmed the return of “The Bad Batch” and “The Mandalorian” for their second and third seasons this year. “The Bad Batch” will have its season premiere in the summer, while the exact release date for “The Mandalorian” is unknown. Meanwhile, new episodes of Lucasfilms latest project “The Book of Boba Fett” are currently streaming on Disney + every Wednesday.
