As we are already almost a month into the 2026-2027 school year, most have settled in and most are still figuring it out. As a senior who has been through the ins and outs of high school the past 3 years, I feel the need to give advice to not just freshmen but everyone! Navigating through high school can be tricky and complicated but as long as you stick to these few rules you will be fine and it will breeze through faster than expected.
Cherish your time
As you get older and especially when you start high school you’re going to have everyone tell you that it will go by in the blink of an eye. It may sound annoying or cliche when it’s coming from everyone, including parents, family members, teachers, and people older than you, but it really is true. High school will go by in the blink of an eye and the most important thing to do is cherish your time here. You’re probably not going to miss the tests or the drama or the early-morning wake-ups, but you will miss the memories and the football games and most importantly still being a careless kid. As you grow up, life becomes harder and more busy, but when you’re still in high school the best thing you can do is live in the moment. Stop rushing life and learn to live in it and start to appreciate it!

Focus, Focus, Focus
As you get older you learn that learning comes from tuning in and engagement in what you’re being taught. More than likely, if you pay attention and focus on what you’re being taught, then you will pass. If your brain can’t focus sometimes then studying in a quiet environment is the best way to retain the information. In your free time, especially if you have a quiz or test coming up, make flashcards or color code the information. The best way to retain information is focus on what is being said and then try and summarize it in your own words, sometimes even relating to the information in your own way is a good way to memorize it. Making it into your own fun way to learn by using colors and fun cards, even making it into a game is fun most of the time. And make sure to keep everything neat and organized.
Romanticize EVERYTHING
Romanticizing school is a way to make it seem fun, and when I say everything I mean everything. Always have something to look forward to and you’ll be set. A way to do this is do colorful notes, make pretty flashcards, study at a coffee shop or in your room with a candle lit, or even wear cute outfits and do your makeup and hair all cute every day you can. I truly believe in the saying, ‘look good, feel good,’ every time I have felt pretty, I have locked in on school. Make sure you also stay energized, I always have my morning coffee so I am awake the whole school day and I also make sure to go to bed at a decent time. Make life pretty and happy while you’re living it and it will love you back.
