As back to school rolls around this year, we get to welcome a new Freshman class! When I was a Freshman, I got lost a million times and made a million mistakes. Freshman year is the year when you learn who you are. This guide is to hopefully help take some stress off you and help the transition from middle to high school go easily!

Please, I cannot stress this enough, be nice to your teachers. I’m not asking you to be best friends with them but just be respectful. Teachers are here to help you in their class, so don’t make their job difficult.
Go to the open house! During my freshman year I was too busy with plans to go, but I regretted it when I kept getting lost and having to ask teachers for directions. Also, going to open house gives you a chance to meet your teachers and ask them questions you may have about the course.
Learn how to study! Studying is different for everyone since each person learns their own way. Whether it’s reviewing flash cards or going to a coffee shop like Starbucks, studying will help you retain the knowledge more than cramming the night before.

Take good notes! Note taking is different for everyone, and it’s one of those things where you have to see what works best for you. A tip that I’ve learned is to only write one to two phrases on a note card. Writing everything about the subject on the slide is a waste of time. It’s easier just to sum up the main points rather than writing each paragraph. You can even highlight terms and their definitions or things that could be tested on. However, your notes are uniquely you so however you choose to do it will work as long as you understand it!
Step out of your comfort zone! High school is the time to experience new things. Join a club you’ve never heard of before, try a new sport, or reach out to people you don’t know. High school is the time to meet new people and try new things!
Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Starting high school can feel overwhelming, and it’s okay if you don’t have everything figured out right away. If you’re confused about an assignment, can’t find your classroom, or just need advice, your teachers, counselors, and even upperclassmen are there to support you. Asking questions is one of the best ways to learn and grow!

Starting high school can be scary, but it doesn’t have to be. You’re going to get lost, you’re going to make mistakes, and have days where you feel like you have no idea what you’re doing, but trust me, it’s okay! Everyone must start somewhere. Be respectful, try new things, ask for help when you need it. Most importantly, try to remember to enjoy your freshman year. High school goes by faster than you think, so make the most of it!
