My Experience In Being A Sideline Cheerleader: Ava Baggerly

Have you ever wanted to be a Sideline football cheer leader but not sure you can? It takes a lot of work and a lot of time into learning the cheers and band dances but it really does make football games so much fun. I am a sideline cheerleader myself and it is my favorite thing ever. Cheering the games is so much and also watching the game front row is so much fun. It’s also very fun when you can get the crowd hyped up with you and get everyone cheering for the team.

Cheer takes a lot of work and dedication. A lot of people think you can only make it if you tumble or are good at stunting but a lot of it is personality. You always have to have a good mind set and always want to bring people up rather than down and coaches really do notice that. Personally I can tumble but I have always had coaches tell me I have a great attitude and always want the team to get better. Just always make sure you smile, be loud, and cheer other cheerleaders on.

Cheerleading isn’t just the skills, its being able to command a stadium to look at you and just want to get pumped up.

I have cheered for 6 years now and it was the best decision I ever made. I started off with gymnastics for 9 years and then realized I enjoyed the tumbling aspect more than anything else, so my parents signed me up for cheer and I’m so happy I made that decision. I started off in 6th grade and I was nervous about cheering with girls who have cheered their whole lives but after the first game I knew that I loved it.

I have tumbled since 6th grade but I have had a lot of obstacles that have held me back. My highest tumbling skill was a round off back tuck in 8th grade and then I tore my flexor tendon in my right foot. I was in a boot for 2 months and physical therapy for a while. After that injury i pushed harder to get my skills back and I did until I hurt my other foot. After I got my round off back handspring half I tore my tendon on my left foot. I was devastated because I had worked so hard but it only pushed me harder. After I finished physical therapy on that foot I have been back in tumbling working harder than ever before.

After all of my set backs I tried out for the Sideline cheer team and Competition which I’ve never done before. I ended up making both teams and I’m so excited to start. Moral of the story yes, it might be scary to start something new and there’s always something holding you back but never give up and do what you want to do and it will always work out.

A good cheerleader is not measured by the height of her jumps but by the span of her spirit.
