Have you ever had a dessert that completely melts in your mouth, so delicious that it makes you sigh? Well, that is what a Suspiro, also known as Meringue, is! With its Spanish name ‘Suspiro,’ meaning ‘sigh,’ Meringues are a European-originated dessert, very popular in Mexico, Costa Rica, Brazil, and Portugal.
After growing up eating these delicious sweets, I feel as though I must share the secret. The good thing about Suspiros is that even if you can’t cook, this recipe does not need skill. It is simply three ingredients thrown together in a bowl and then put in the oven. Then you have these delicious hard cookies on the outside but completely soft and delicious on the inside.

Ingredients
- 1 cup of white sugar
- 3 egg whites
- 1 teaspoon of lime juice
To start, you will need to separate egg yolks from the egg whites. Since you will not need the yolks for this recipe, you can store them to make something else. Then, with an electric mixer for the best result, mix the egg whites until they form a soft, creamy texture. Slowly start to add one cup of white sugar to the mix. It is very important to add it one to two tablespoons at a time to avoid forming clumps. Lastly, add a tiny bit of lime juice to give it that distinguishable Suspiro taste.

Put the mixture into a piping bag and start pouring it into your baking sheet. Many consider this the hardest part of the easy recipes, as capturing the flower shape could be difficult. Though the shape of a Suspiro does not affect the taste, the key to achieving the perfect flower shape is practice! But at first, it is completely okay for your Suspiros to look like a failed experiment; they will still taste amazing!
Lastly, throw them into the oven for one and a half to two hours at 175 degrees Fahrenheit. Make sure to wait at least two hours before trying them; they will be extremely hot.

Suspiros are an easy and fast way to prepare delicious cookies to store at home for unexpected visitors, as well as a great way to impress your friends with something I’m certain they have never tried before. Bringing me that nostalgia with every melting bite, Suspiros are simply something that needs to be tried!
