Holiday history

With all of the talk about Easter going on…you may be wondering, Where did the whole Easter bunny idea come from?

The Easter Bunny originated from an ancient pagan tradition. The festival of Eostre honored the goddess of fertility and spring, and that goddess was a rabbit! It is believed that in the 1700s, German immigrants to Pennsylvania said a rabbit was laying colorful eggs as gifts to good children. Eventually, this popular bunny everyone was mentioning became a new tradition to Easter across America.

But of course, Easter isn’t the same everywhere!

Not all cultures understand what Easter is fully about but still celebrate it in unique ways. In Poland, families have a tradition to eat a filling breakfast. The most popular dish is a bread called babka. Similarly, France gets together with people in the town to create a giant omelet. Thousands of eggs are cracked, and people gather around and have a fun time. A big part of Easter for Germany is decorating! They hang painted eggs on tree branches just like we would hang ornaments on Christmas trees!

Piles of Peeps

Easter is a holiday full of sweet treats, and Peeps marshmallows have certainly overtaken the rest. Every spring, the shelves are stocked full with different flavors of Peeps in every Easter section I come across.

How can there be so many different flavors of Peeps? Are they even all that good?

Well, The Warrior Word took it upon our own hands to see for ourselves. Our journalism club members tried a total of 7 different Peeps flavors in order to give you an honest review of the peculiar flavors hitting the stores every year.

Then, we consulted the rest of our journalism team to help us come up with the top 3 peeps flavors. Here’s our honest Peeps review!

Dr. Pepper- 7.5/10

First, we have the Dr. Pepper flavored Peep. That’s right, the soda. This Peep was supposed to resemble the soda we all know and love, and we were pleasantly surprised. It wasn’t a very strong and overwhelming flavor which made it pretty good, but it was kind of bland and didn’t taste exactly like the drink.

Blue Raspberry- 6/10

Next we tried the blue raspberry Peep, which definitely did a great job of capturing the blue raspberry flavor. It was super strong and almost gave a sour-like taste. We still don’t know how to feel about a blue raspberry flavored marshmallow, but if that’s what you’re looking for, this is the Peep for you.

S’mores- 9/10

This Peep certainly out-does the rest. The chocolate covered marshmallow makes the perfect combination and it’s absolutely delicious. The chocolate really does add the perfect touch, and it would be even better roasted over the fire with a graham cracker.

Chocolate covered strawberry- 5/10

Similar to the s’mores Peep, this marshmallow was dipped in chocolate just like an actual chocolate covered strawberry would be. We agreed that the strawberry flavor wasn’t our favorite as it was kind of artificial tasting, but the chocolate made it better.

Cotton candy- 1/10

Whatever you do, avoid this flavor Peep! Out of all of the ones we tried, this one was by far the worst. It tasted nothing like cotton candy and was not enjoyable at all. Although, it does get a point for its adorable pink and blue color combo.

Birthday cake- 3/10

This Peep did not do a good job capturing the birthday cake flavor. It seems like it could’ve been really good, but it didn’t really taste like birthday cake and was way too sweet for our liking. If the birthday cake flavor is what you’re looking for, I’d go buy a real cake to enjoy!

Original- 8/10

Last but not least, the classic Peep we all know and love. It’s just a basic marshmallow sprinkled with sugar and it’s perfect if you’re looking for something simple, yet delicious!

The journalism club would declare the official top 3 Peeps flavors as s’mores, original, and Dr. Pepper! However, our class decided that the true best flavors of Peeps were blue raspberry, s’mores, and cotton candy. So, we advise you to get to tasting and see for yourself!

The Cadbury craze

While Peeps have become a sweet marshmallow necessity to many, one of the most popular Easter chocolates are the famous Cadbury eggs, egg-shaped chocolate filled with sweet white and yellow fondant-like filling.

Cadbury eggs are a delicious way to celebrate the holiday, but there are also some really interesting things many people don’t know about the popular candy. Here are some quick fun facts about Cadbury eggs!

  • Cadbury goes back to 1824 when it was founded by John Cadbury
  • The first eggs were created in 1875 and were made with dark chocolate and a smooth surface
  • 500 million eggs are made each year
  • There are 25 different kinds of eggs
  • The first ad for them aired in the 70’s
  • They look different in other countries
  • Hershey’s makes the eggs in the US
  • The record for the fastest eating of a Cadbury creme egg is 8.6 seconds
