Cherokee High School’s very own head softball coach Tonya Carlisle was inducted into the Georgia Dugout Club Hall of Fame on Dec. 10.
Carlisle’s many accomplishments on the softball field are what have allowed her to receive such an honor. Her hard work during her playing career at KSU and head coach at Cherokee High School has not gone unnoticed, and has certainly payed off.
As a four-year starter for the Kennesaw State University Owls, the young star had already compiled an immense amount of success under her belt before she had ever picked up the coaching stature.
Her time as a player at KSU included:
- 1995 Peach Belt Athletic Conference Player of the Year
- 1995 NCAA Division II All-American honoree
- Two-time NAIA All-District performer
- Ranked #10 in KSU’s all-time batting list, hitting .383
- 1993 season batting average of .425 ranks eighth in KSU’s single season history
- Played 190 games in four seasons with .505 slugging percentage and .467 on-base percentage, with 213 hits
- Never struck out more than 10 times in a single season
Impressed yet? She has only rounded first base.
After graduating with a B.S. in Exercise Science, Carlisle came back to KSU as an assistant coach to help the team get to their second NCAA Division II national championship and in 2005, helped KSU to a national runner-up finish in their final Division II season. She was later inducted into the Kennesaw State Softball Circle in 2004 and in 2008, she was inducted into the KSU Athletic Hall of Fame.
In 2004, Carlisle became a Warrior, and the rest is history. In her 20 years as Head Coach, she has led her teams to 5 Region Championships, 17 State Playoff appearances, 5 Sweet Sixteens, 4 Elite Eights, 3 Final Fours, 1 State Runner-Up, 1 3rd place, 1 2nd, 1 4th, and 1 fifth state finish. She has also accumulated well over 400 wins as a Head Coach, which the team celebrated with her in their 2021 season.
