The CHS Varsity Baseball Team took part in the Georgia Dugout Club Tournament on February 25 and 26, playing against Parkview High School, North Paulding High School and Blessed Trinity Catholic High School at PBR at LakePoint Sports.
The tournament started off on Friday with a game against the three-time defending State Champions, the Parkview Panthers. Expectations were high for Parkview as the defending champs, but Cherokee was not discouraged.
Cherokee started off with a bang in the top of the first with a home run hit on the first pitch by senior, Lex Kenney. Parkview showed their strength and came back in the bottom of the first to score two runs, taking the lead. Throughout the game, the score remained close. Cherokee tied it up in the top of the fourth when senior, Nate Courtwright, scored. The teams remained tied and continued into two extra innings until the bottom of the tenth when Parkview scored with a single with bases loaded. Parkview claimed the victory with a final score of 2-1.

The second game was held on Saturday against Blessed Trinity. Like the first game, the second game began and remained close. Both teams held each other off from scoring until the bottom of the third when Blessed Trinity scored once, taking the lead. Cherokee quickly tied it up in the top of the fourth inning. Neither team scored again until the bottom of the sixth when Blessed Trinity scored four runs, taking the lead. Cherokee came back as a force in the top of the seventh scoring three runs; however, they could not quite pull it off with the fourth. Blessed Trinity took the victory with a final score of 5-4.

The third and final game of the tournament was held Saturday afternoon against the 2021 State Runner-Up, North Paulding. Cherokee started their final game off strong, taking the lead early in the first inning. However, North Paulding was able to come back and tie it up in the bottom of the second. The whole game was a back-and-forth battle between the two. Cherokee finally held onto the lead when Cherokee scored in the top of the fourth and was able to hold off North Paulding from scoring in the bottom of the inning. The Warriors were able to put up two on the board in the top of the sixth without North Paulding coming back to score and tie it up. Cherokee continued on in the seventh inning with another run, ending the game with a score of 6-2.
The team battled hard in their first tournament of the 2022 season. We are proud of our CHS Varsity Baseball Warriors for their diligent work.
The Warriors will take on Milton on Tuesday, March 15, at 5:55 p.m. at home at Beautiful Warrior Field. Come out and support your Warriors as they face the Eagles!
