Be your own Valentine: The importance of self-love on the day of love

Valentine’s Day: the day of love and romance. This day can be the best or the worst depending on your romantic status. Not everyone has been blessed by Aphrodite this time of year and often can feel bitter at all the couples on this lovely day.

“Even though the day is supposedly all about love, it’s really just about romantic relationships, which leaves out single people — and there are a lot of single people,” said The Insider in their article on why Valentine’s Day is the worst.

But, Valentine’s Day doesn’t just have to be about romantic relationships. There’s actually different types of love other than romantic. The Greeks actually had seven different types of love. This included but was not limited too, familial love, the love of a friendship, and of course, self-love.

Self-care and self-love has seem to be a trend that sky rocketed in the last couple and there is no sign of it coming back down.

This is amazing, especially for our generation, Gen Z. Recent studies show that Gen Z is more likely to have mental illnesses than other generations. Self-love can help with the mental health crisis that we’re now facing.

Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to practice self-love (or you could even wait a day after for all the sales!)

What does actually count as self-love though?

“Self-love means having a high regard for your own well-being and happiness. Self-love means taking care of your own needs and not sacrificing your well-being to please others. Self-love means not settling for less than you deserve,” said Dr. Andrea Brandt PhD.

While there’s millions of things you can do to love yourself year round, Valentine’s Day should be above and beyond.

Here’s three ideas of what you can do this Valentine’s Day for yourself

You can have a spa day at home, grab some face masks and your best skin care routine. Valentine’s Day is perfect for self-care, you could even go and pick up some of the special Valentine’s skin care products.

Go out to eat, whether it’s a fancy restaurant or ordering a pizza, food is the way into someone’s heart. Treating yourself to your favorite food is a great way to show self-love. You could even invite some friends over to share the self-love (and that large pizza you can’t finish on your own.)

Go shopping, nothing says self-love like retail therapy. Take a trip to the mall and buy yourself something nice, or if you like me, go to Hobby Lobby and spend more money on crafts that you’ll probably never use, or even more decor for your already cluttered room.

No matter what you to for Valentine’s Day, make sure you’re taking care of yourself, and don’t let this be a one day thing. You deserve love every day of the year. You are special and important. This school and this world wouldn’t be the same without you.

Happy Valentine’s Day!
